Open Hands provides
the following services to assist the elderly, the disabled, or the
economically disadvantaged in Northern New Mexico. Click on the links
below to read more about each service and their associated programs.
Services are provided on a sliding fee scale, and donations are welcome.
Adult
Day Services
Open Hands offers the only nonprofit community-based adult day care program
in Santa Fe county. The regular weekday program provides a variety of therapeutic
and recreational activities in a group setting for frail elderly, socially isolated, and physically challenged adults. The combined
elements of the program provide the means for clients to live independently,
thereby preventing expensive institutionalization.
- Adult Day Care Center
- An all-day program available 5 days per week, that provides transportation,
meals and snacks, socialization, therapeutic recreation, entertainment,
supervised outings and health education. Available Monday through Friday
from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
- Saturday Respite Care – Meals and snacks, socialization, therapeutic recreation, and
entertainment
on Saturdays for clients from
10:00 am to 4:00 pm to provide respite relief to their working
caregivers, giving them personal time to attend to chores, appointments,
social
visits, etc.
- "Care By Design" -
A specifically designed program for those with Alzheimer’s
and dementia.

Community
Outreach Services
Community Outreach Services offers
assistance to frail elderly, the disabled or economically disadvantaged
to enable them to continue living in their own homes. Staff and volunteers
provide information and services that are administered through many
programs.
- Healthcare Advocacy - Advises
clients on the safe and proper use of medications and offers suggestions
for purchasing them more
economically.
- Home
Safety Assessments & Modifications - Assists people to live safely in their
home by assessing potential hazards and making modifications to aid
accessibility, mobility and safety, such as ramps, grab bars, and smoke
detectors.
- Medical Equipment Loan
Bank - Lends assistive medical equipment, such
as canes, walkers, wheelchairs and shower seats, for several
months without charge.
- Individual Development Accounts - Assistance in Saving for Higher Education Home Purchase or Business "Start up".

Retail Store
The Open Hands Thrift Store opened its current location on January 2, 2009. Its purpose is to help support the programs of Open Hands. The store serves more than 1,400 individuals and families yearly by selling good-condition, reduced-cost used and new furniture, clothing, electronics and sporting equipment, books, housewares, and more. Pick-up service is available in some cases. We pride ourselves on our friendly service, and we accept donations whenever the store is open. Please consider us whenever you have items to donate.
