Special Care for Your Loved One
Our staff are specially trained to assist you in meeting the challenges of caring at home for loved ones with aging and physical challenges, Alzheimer's or other dementias. Our state of the art facility offers a safe and secure environment, an enclosed outdoor garden courtyard, dining, art room and activity area. We provide social activities, meals, field trips, health related monitoring and consultation services. Our caring staff includes a registered nurse during peak client hours, and we work with each client and caregiver to meet identified needs of the client and provide the famility with information and resources to assist them. Also on staff is an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer who focuses on working with frail elders one to one or in small groups to maintain or increase their strength, flexibility, and balance, all designed to maintain independence with daily living skills and to prevent falls.
Benefits of Adult Day Services
Adult day services allow caregivers peace of mind to continue working outside the home, help with the physical care of a loved one, avoid or delay placing a loved one in institutional care, and give caregivers respite from what can be a "24/7" responsibility. Caregivers receive one to one consultation on outside resources and how to navigate the eldercare system and are supported in the challenges of taking care of an aging loved one at home.
Adult day service participants interact socially with peers, share in stimulating activities, and receive assistance with the activities of daily living with dignity. Their feelings of depression and or isolation decrease, while their self esteem increases and they find or maintain interests in hobbies and activities; some report they sleep better at night.

Saturday Adult Day Respite Care.
Available Saturdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and funded in part by a grant from the New Mexico Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association the program gives the caregiver the time they need to run errands or take care of themselves. Reservations are taken on a weekly basis as the program size is limited to ten individuals per weekend who must be registered with the Adult Day Services prior to attending. Participants engage in a variety of activities and enjoy lunch while at the program.
Care by Design- For those with dementia and early Alzheimer's.
Adult Day Services are tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients with early Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Care By Design is a program of structured activities that engage the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia in meaningful activities within the context of the Adult Day Services weekday program. It builds on using familiar skills and strengths that the individual still retains to enhance their feelings of self worth, security and meaning through a continued sense of dignity and respect. These activities often include but are not limited to memory games, art activities, word and poetry projects.

Individual Development Accounts (IDA Program)
The Individual Development Account program at Open Hands is designed to lift families out of poverty by providing as much as $4000 to pursue home ownership, additional education or a business start-up. In practice, IDAs are matched savings accounts that provide income eligible individuals with asset incentives for saving money. All program participants must be legal US citizens and are required to complete a free, financial literacy course before opening savings accounts. Upon completion of the class, participants begin the savings process with a $10 deposit into a restricted custodial account. Once an account is established, every $1 of earned income the participant deposits is matched by $4 provided through state and federal funds.
Participants are matched with an Asset Advisor, an entrepreneur or community leader who provides information and periodically helps them solve the challenges that arise while working to buy a home, start a business or go back to school. Asset Advisors have the social capital that is rare among economically limited families; Advisors can link participants to informational resources and network connections to foster community relationships as they move out of poverty. By innovatively uniting Individual Development Accounts with financial literacy training and supportive Asset Advisors, Open Hands is helping families in poverty gain assets that promote a sense of well being, financial stability and long-term change.
