National Senior Organizations

National Education and Resource Center on Women and Retirement Planning www.wiserwomen.org - The Administration on Aging and the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) have jointly established a web-based National Education and Resource Center on Women and Retirement Planning (Center). The Center’s overriding goal is to assist the Aging Network in educating women of all ages about planning for their future financial, health and long-term care.

AARP www.aarp.org - AARP serves the needs and interests of people 50+ through information and education, advocacy, and community services provided by a network of local chapters and volunteers throughout the country. This site offers a wide range of information on long-term care and other topics useful to older persons and their families.

ABA Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly www.abanet.org/elderly - The American Bar Association Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly website includes a directory on where to find state law and aging resources, profiles of Commission publications and a booklet on health care advance directives.

Administration on Aging www.aoa.gov - The Administration on Aging site has a link to Eldercare Locator for specific information on state and area agencies on aging and other local community resources. It also includes information about the long-term care ombudsman program, the elder abuse prevention program, caregiver resources, recent press releases and updates on aging nationally.

Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org - The Alzheimer’s Association website offers information about local chapters, resources for families, tips on understanding and coping with Alzheimer’s, updates on research and ways to get involved.

American Association of Homes and Services for the Aged www.aahsa.org - The members of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) serve two million people every day through mission-driven, not-for-profit organizations dedicated to providing the services people need, when they need them, in the place they call home. AAHSA members offer the continuum of aging services: adult day services, home health, community services, senior housing, assisted living residences, continuing care retirement communities, and nursing homes. AAHSA's commitment is to create the future of aging services through quality people can trust. AAHSA's vision is for healthy, affordable, ethical, aging services for America.

American Society of Consultant Pharmacists www.ascp.org - The ASCP site includes resources for pharmacists in serving seniors, the latest on prescription drug proposals, press releases and information on the organization.

Center for Excellence in Assisted Living www.theceal.org - CEAL is composed of the diverse stakeholders of assisted living, and was created to be an objective resource center to facilitate quality improvement in assisted living; increase the availability of research on quality in assisted living; and to provide a national clearinghouse for information on assisted living.

Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities www.carf.org/aging - Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, CARF International is an independent, nonprofit accreditor of human service providers in the areas of rehabilitation and aging services, among others. The CARF family of organizations currently accredits more than 4,900 providers, including assisted living facilities, at more than 17,000 locations in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, and South America. The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC), based in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1985 as the nation's only accrediting body of continuing care retirement communities and aging services networks. The CARF web site provides information on choosing a long-term care provider.

Guide to Retirement Living www.retirement-living.com - The Guide to Retirement Living is a comprehensive listing of senior living options in the mid-Atlantic region. Regional editions include the DC metropolitan area, the state of Maryland and the Philadelphia area. It offers a directory of continuing care retirement communities, independent living, assisted living and nursing facilities.

Legal Services Corporation www.lsc.gov/fundprog.htm - The LSC site has contact information for the legal services office in your area. Local legal services programs offer legal assistance with residents’ rights, public benefits, consumer problems, wills, health care decision-making and other areas.

National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys www.naela.org - The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc. is a non-profit association that assists lawyers, bar organizations and others who work with older clients and their families. The site includes a find-a-lawyer directory.

National Association of Area Agencies on Aging www.n4a.org - The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) is the umbrella organization for the 655 area agencies on aging (AAAs) and more than 230 Title VI Native American aging programs in the U.S. The N4A site includes access to the Eldercare Locator, as well as press releases, policy papers and upcoming events.

National Association of State Units on Aging www.nasua.org - The National Association of State Units on Aging is a national non-profit membership organization comprised of the 57 state and territorial government agencies on aging. The site includes a list and contact information for all state units on aging, updates, policy information, and access to the Eldercare Locator.

National Association of Geriatric Care Managers www.caremanager.org - GCM is a non-profit, professional organization of more than 1500 practitioners whose goal is the advancement of dignified care for the elderly and their families. The site includes a find-a –care-manager directory.

National Center for Assisted Living www.ncal.org - The National Center For Assisted Living (NCAL) is the assisted living voice of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), the nation?s largest organization representing long term care. The diversification of long term care has brought rapid growth to the assisted living profession, and NCAL is an essential resource for professionals in the field. Through NCAL?s national federation of state affiliates, NCAL supports lobbying efforts at the state level. While NCAL primarily focuses on federal issues, NCAL provides the support state affiliates need to impact policy decisions regarding assisted living issues.

National Center on Elder Abuse www.elderabusecenter.org - The NCEA site describes what elder abuse is, how it can be addressed, how often it happens and to whom, and what the major causes are This site includes fact sheets on elder abuse, abuse reporting information, updates and features of the center. It also features access to a listserver and information about the Center’ clearinghouse and publications.

National Senior Citizens Law Center www.nsclc.org - This site has an on-line library of periodicals, manuals and articles about NSCLC services, and press releases about current issues affecting the elderly. It is useful for advocates, legal services attorneys and policy specialists.

Ombudsman Resource Center www.ltcombudsman.org - The National Long Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center provides support, technical assistance and training to the 53 State Long Term Care Ombudsman Programs and their statewide networks of almost 600 regional (local) programs.
